Traduire d'une langue en une autre. Les Septante ont interprété l'Ancien Testament. Cet ambassadeur fit à ce prince un discours qui fut interprété en français.   Il signifie aussi, Expliquer ce qu'il y a d'obscur et d'ambigu dans un écrit, dans une loi, dans un acte, etc. Interpréter bien. Interpréter mal. Ceux qui ont interprété l'Écriture sainte. Comment interprétez-vous ce passage ? Les jurisconsultes interprètent cette disposition de plusieurs manières. Les clauses d'une convention doivent s'interpréter les unes par les autres.   Il signifie, dans une acception plus étendue, Expliquer, deviner une chose par induction, ou Tirer d'une chose quelque induction, quelque présage, etc. Est-ce à vous à interpréter ma pensée, ma volonté, mes intentions ? INTERPRÉTER, signifie encore, Prendre un discours ou une action en bonne ou en mauvaise part. Il a fait, il a dit telle chose, je ne sais comment cela sera interprété. Cette action peut s'interpréter en bien, s'interpréter en mal, s'interpréter en mauvaise part. Cela peut être diversement interprété. Interpréter malicieusement, malignement, favorablement.
